CdTe film solar cells rapidly popularized due to low cost

Like the II-V compound, the combination of the Group II and Group VI (S, Se, Te) elements can also form a semiconductor having a covalent bond. Group II is a divalent metal element such as Zn or Cd located in the 12th column of the periodic table. The solar cell material CdTe is one of the I-M group semiconductors. The outermost layer of Cd has only two electrons, and eight electrons are shared with the V element of the outermost six electrons. The maximum conversion efficiency of a small-area panel is 16.7%, and even for a multi-product film, the conversion efficiency will exceed 10%.

CdTe is a direct transition type semiconductor in which light absorption rises sharply. The bandgap is 1.48eV, which we believe has the highest conversion efficiency according to the theory of limit conversion efficiency introduced in (026). In the CdTe solar cell, the p-type material has CdTe, and the n-type material has CdS to form a pn junction. This combination of different kinds of substances is called a heterojunction.
